How Copyright Laws Affect You
"How Copyright Laws Affect You"
By © Richard Male
Do you write articles that are viewed on the web or some printed publication? Or do you make original clip art or web graphics to use on your site or to sell? Whether you know it or not, your work is protected by copyright laws. You may be wondering what this means for you. Here I will explain a little about how copyright works how this is for your benefit.
What is copyright?
It is a protection for anyone that creates an original work for publication. The Websters New World Dictionary says that copyright is 'the only legal right to publish, produce, or sell a particularpiece of writing, art, or music.'
This means that if you create something such as an article, or even clip art, only you have the right to sell or publish it. The only way that someone else can sell or publish it is only with your permission.
How do you get your work copyrighted?
You are not required to do anything special to get your stuff copyrighted. You don't have to fill out any forms. You don't have to call your lawyers, and you don't have to give up your right as the firstborn child. When you create something either on paper or the web, it's already protected.
Can you use something that you find on another site?
Only under certain conditions may you use something that someone else has made. If you wish to reprint an entire article that you think would be good to have in your publication, you MUST get the writers permission first. This also applies to using clip art or other images. If you want to use only a small portion, such as 2 or 3 sentences, you can do that without permission, but you should state that this came from a specific source. It would also be appropriate to provide a link to the creator's web site if possible to show your appreciation for letting you use their work.
One last note, put a copyright notice at the bottom of each of your pages with any instructions about use of your content. Let people know if you allow your articles or clip art to be used and if they do use them that they should put a link back to your home page. If you don't want your work reproduced, then put something like:
'© Copyright 2000, All rights reserved'
